Abstract

In the higher echelons of American science, the atmospheric sciences are generally considered to be an "applied science," not one of the basic sciences such as chemistry or physics. Whether you agree or disagree with that perspective of the atmospheric sciences, I believe that atmospheric scientists, individually and collectively, must try to answer two questions: "Who cares what we do?" and "What can we do for the common good?"
